Elliptical Training Benefits

An elliptical trainer, also known as a cross-trainer, is a stationary machine that simulates walking, running, or stair climbing. A key advantage is that it provides an excellent cardiovascular workout **without causing significant impact on your joints.** This makes it a great choice for people of all fitness levels.

Regular elliptical workouts offer numerous health benefits, including:

  • Improved cardiovascular health.
  • Effective weight management and calorie burning.
  • Reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
  • Better blood pressure control.
  • Strengthening of bones, muscles, and joints with minimal stress.

How Many Calories Does an Elliptical Burn?

The number of calories burned on an elliptical depends on your body weight, the duration of the workout, and its intensity. The intensity is measured using a value called **MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task)**.

One MET represents the energy you use when sitting at rest. By assigning a MET value to an activity, we can estimate its energy expenditure. The formula to calculate calories burned is:

Calories Burned = (Time in minutes × MET × 3.5 × Weight in kg) / 200

MET Values for Elliptical Training

This calculator uses the following standard MET values for different effort levels on an elliptical trainer:

Activity TypeMET Value
Light effort (Resistance level ~2)4.6
Moderate effort (Resistance level ~5)4.9
Vigorous effort (Resistance level ~8)5.7
