About the Army Body Composition Program (ABCP)

The Army Body Composition Program (ABCP) ensures that all soldiers maintain the level of physical readiness required to perform their duties. As part of this program, soldiers must meet specific body fat standards. This calculator uses the one-site circumference method outlined in the Army's directive ALARACT 046/2023, which became effective in June 2023. This method provides a simple and quick assessment of a soldier's body fat percentage.

How to Take Measurements

To ensure accuracy, follow the official U.S. Army guidelines for measurement. Take at least three measurements and average them.

  • Weight: Weigh yourself on a calibrated scale, preferably in the morning. Round to the nearest pound.
  • Waist: For all personnel, measure the abdominal circumference at the level of the navel (belly button). The measurement should be taken at the end of a normal exhalation. Round to the nearest 0.5 inch.

Soldiers who score 540 or higher on the Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT), with a minimum of 80 points in each event, are exempt from the body fat assessment.
